Artist Statement

My art delves into the intricate tapestry of emotional, social, and cultural narratives experienced by individuals navigating challenges and disparities in economically disadvantaged communities. Through a creatively expressive lens, I aspire to shed light on community involvement and champion mental health advocacy, giving voice to our collective journey.

Drawing inspiration from diverse visual traditions, I blend elements of fine art photography, candid photo documentation, and editorial concepts, predominantly using monochromatic and black-and-white palettes. This choice accentuates the subtle nuances and profound depths of an individual’s life story, magnifying the emotional essence at its core.

NiEtta Reynolds

My method comes from visual traditions varying from fine art photography, photo documentation, and editorial conception using monochromatic and black-and-white imagery.

NiEtta Reynolds is a mental health advocate, podcast director, artiste, and 7th-grade teacher in Dallas, Texas.NiEtta grew up in the southern sector of Dallas in a historically black neighborhood where tall, majestic trees lined the sidewalks alongside enormous houses filled with warm and friendly neighbors. She came up with art projects with her siblings.

A vivid imagination was her constant companion. Recognizing her innate artistic tendencies as she sketched and crafted with her siblings, her parents nurtured this passion by gifting her with paintbrushes, blank canvases, and, at the age of 9, a disposable Kodak camera.

As an adult, NiEtta regularly took photos as a hobby that brought joy to her friends and family, but she also realized that photography is a healthy and unique outlet to express her soul. The strong connection to photography and artistic creativity led her to create a podcast called The Help Show that connects people to mental health resources in the community.

Known for her monochromatic and black-and-white documentary-style imagery, NiEtta enjoys documenting the triumphs of hardships in disadvantaged neighborhoods. She uses photography to communicate with a broader audience to express how she views mental health in today’s black and brown societies.

NiEtta attended Jarvis Christian College and received her Bachelor of Science in Sociology with a minor in psychology in 2003. She then attended Texas A&M University-Commerce, where she received a Master’s degree in Social Work in 2019.
